Significant spongy moth defoliation was reported for eastern New York and northeastern Pennsylvania in late spring/early summer 2024. These maps show the extent and severity of this defoliation prior to refoliation later that summer.  Note in particular how extensive the low severity defoliation in yellow is on some upland sites. These areas are difficult to quantify without use of remote sensing because defoliation is subtle and refoliation can be rapid.
