2003 Ice Storm in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia
The February 16, 2003 ice storm was a major event for southeastern Ohio, northeastern Kentucky and western West Virginia. Freezing rain led to major winter power outages and extensive hardwood canopy breakage. In the months that followed, portions of the affected forest was mapped by aerial survey in Ohio and West Virginia, but no flights were conducted in Kentucky. With this retrospective analysis using Landsat 5 in HiForm, we get a more complete assessment of likely impacts for both the surveyed and unsurveyed counties. While no local validation is possible after over two decades, this analyses demonstrates the value of more integration of technologies in the future.
